Dr Cliff Nicholls
is a Senior Research Fellow and TRL’s specialist in pavement materials, particularly asphalt surfacings. In the UK, he has been heavily involved with the approval of many proprietary thin surfacings, the acceptance of porous asphalt as a surfacing material on trunk roads and revisions to the UK design guide of surface dressings. He is involved on a range of British Standards Institution, and British Board of Agrément committees with particular emphasis on test methods. He is also the Convenor of the Comité Européen de Normalisation task group on test methods for asphalt materials (CEN TC227/WG1/TG2).
has 45 years’ experience of the asphalt industry, covering production, commercial, contracting and technical disciplines, and working for some of the major players in the industry. He is National President of the Institute of Asphalt Technology.
